Cash Tracking

Keeping small businesses on top of their cash

Being part of the app's vision was a chance to build our knowledge of the growing Fintech sector and offered us the type of design challenge we really enjoy.

Keeping track of your finances as a small business owner and understanding your cash position from day to day can be tricky. But our client, a lean Northern California retailer, had a vision to change that.

The Brief

Create an app that would give small businesses a single data source for their finances.

The Approach

Our client wanted a web application that gives business users access to financial data, so they can see where the business stands at the end of each day. If your business accepts credit card payments, it helps you see your current cash position and what future payments you can expect, and recalculates when payments are received.

It’s also a powerful reporting tool, providing precise data on forecast earnings against actual cash.

We needed to build a system that would give businesses all the data they needed. It also had to provide comprehensive reports that visualised complex data clearly and simply. We did that by creating the following:

A system that allowed each location to upload daily ‘x-outs’.

A reporting system that starts with a dashboard that gives an overview of the major factors and highlights potential problems;

A feature that imports bank information and automatically updates the figures (which will eventually link directly to bank accounts, once the finance industry catches up with us);

Functionality that tracks and predicts shortfalls in cash, with a “Trello-like” interface that enables you to manage weekly outgoings;

The ability to add, move and split outgoing payments.

The Result

Designing and building Cash Tracking gave us valuable knowledge of working with financial data and built on our data visualisation expertise. While developing for the iPad browser improved our capabilities in the touch-based HTML user interface for iPad.

“People want to touch and use it. Having never developed an app before, I really liked the Despark process and all the tools you use.” – Michael Gabrys
